Santa Sangre (1989)

After a long absence, Jodorowsky returned to form with this surreal tale centered around a circus. It stars Jodorowsky's son and grandson, as a boy named Fenix, who witnesses his father cut off the arms of his mother, before commiting suicide. The film then jumps to Fenix grown up and in an asylum. Soon after this he leaves and finds his mother again. She then uses his arms for her needs and him has her psychological slave. There are many memorable surreal sequences in this film, and like Jodorowsky's other work, always an unconventional and interesting flavour.

"This is a movie like none I have seen before, a wild kaleidoscope of images and outrages, a collision between Freud and Fellini." - Roger Ebert ****

"An astonishing film - a surreal fantasy about violence, revenge and murder." - The Guardian

"A modern masterpiece... like David Lynch visiting the circus." - Samhain Magazine
