Eraserhead

Eraserhead (1976)

A film by David Lynch

This was David Lynch's first feature film and took about four years to complete, mainly because of funding. It was a painstaking effort for Lynch, but he feels it was worth it, and so do I. Shot in black & white, it shows us a laconic, innocent man named Henry Spencer (played by the superb Jack Nance), who lives in a dark, depressing industrial wasteland. He is told by his girlfriend Mary's mother that they have a baby, who we soon see and find is not an ordinary one, it is an embryonic mutant.

And so unfolds the full nightmare of Henry's world, which includes a lady who lives behind his radiator and dances on a stage, and tells him: "In heaven everything is fine"'. There are all kinds of other surreal images on show. Also, the sound is brilliant, especially now the DVD has been released, which has been digitally remixed in Dolby surround sound. The ultimate audio and visual experience to watch and a classic cult movie. Quite simply, one of the greatest films ever made.

"A compulsive hybrid mix of punk surrealism and B picture." - Time Out.
